The film portrays a single day spent on a mountain pasture as an allegory for an entire summer season. In the Bergamasque dialect, mut means “mountain.” Up there, gestures have repeated in similar fashion for hundreds of years. We watch two boys carry them out: milking the cows, tending to livestock enclosures, but also glancing at their phones. The cyclical nature of life becomes a portrait of the bond between humans and animals, and of a family dynamic shaped by silences and affection, all immersed in nature.

In the highest inhabited settlement of the Val di Fassa, in the 1980s, a RAI (Italian National TV) crew documented the life of Liz. The footage from back then is now paired with scenes shot today in the same place, where her daughter Assunta, following her mother’s passing, has returned to live. By continuing deeply rooted habits and taking on the same old labors, Assunta honors her mother’s memory and reaffirms, while renewing it, a cultural and existential identity.

THE MOUNTAIN WON’T MOVE

Zekir and Zarif tend the family’s flock — over 600 sheep guarded by enormous dogs — on a high mountain pasture in Macedonia. With them is their younger brother Zani, who looks after the cows. They spend the summer in a modest, cluttered hut, working, arguing, fighting, and playing. Zarif is thinking about a girl and feels the pull to leave the shepherd’s life behind.
