MATTER OUT OF PLACE

Nikolaus Geyrhalter / Austria / 2022 / 105 min / Colour

In the mountains of Switzerland or in the Maldives, on the Balkan coasts or in the deserts of Nevada, we no longer know where to put all that "misplaced matter",  that is any object or impact that is not natural to the surrounding environment. Nikolaus Geyrhalter, after his previous documentary, Erde (at XXV FFDL in 2019), in which he described the destruction of the landscape caused by mines, continues his discourse on the transformation of nature by man. The documentary shows how the problem of waste disposal is (or is not) tackled in various parts of the world, using evocative photography and a register that ranges from hyper-realistic to visionary. The magnetism of the montage is sometimes severed by shots of people, like Sisyphus, engaged in the never-ending struggle to manage the waste of local realities. A feature film that speaks almost only in images, highlighting the contradictions of certain ecosystems.
