In the small-town bars of southern Italy, relationships between the local men often revolve around the table, with cards and a glass of wine. But in this bar, in a village high in the Sicilian mountains, the game patruni e sutta (master and vassal) is something more. The gestures, crude words, and arguments transform it from a simple pastime into a ritual. In this way, the men’s
humanity emerges powerfully, their experiences accompanied by satisfactions, hopes, disappointments, and habits. The director, originally from this area, returns with a different perspective and by learning to play, learns to recognize his land.
Michele Cirigliano
Born in 1976 in Switzerland, he earned a Masters in Film from the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste in 2014. With Padrone e sotto he participated in various international festivals, among these the Zurich Film Festival, FirstSteps Berlin, Dok Leipzig, Bafici Buenos Aires, Belgrad Documentary and Short Film Festival.
