Decho (68) and Ivan (75) live in the little village of Sushitsa, in the southern Bulgarian hills. Friends for many years, at summer’s end, as always, they dress in costumes called kukeri and take part in a masked dance in the village squares. This custom has ancient origins and is Sushitsa’s principal festival. The tinkling bells, glittering costumes, and decorated masks fill the streets of the town as they have always done and as we see in the period images found in the Archivio Cinematografico Nazionale.
