Pygmejovia - Deti džungle

Pygmies - The children of the jungle

Slovacchia / 2011 / 52 min / Colour

Italian premiere

The explorer Ivan Bulík has travelled at length and explored every corner of the African continent. In the deep forest of the Democratic Republic of Congo he crowns a long-held dream: to meet the Pygmy population and to document their lives and customs. During their trip to the heart of a remote region, plagued by wars and guerrilla attacks, Bulík and the troupe of documentary filmmakers with him meet elephants and huge gorillas in the jungle. Their encounter with the Pygmies is the discovery of a still-intact civilization, devoted to the hunt, that finds spaces and materials in the forest to build simple, circular huts with interwoven branches. The explorers attempt to communicate with these people using body language or drawing with sticks in the red earth. With the Pygmy, they enter the heart of the forest in search of medicinal herbs and food. Yet a doubt hangs in their minds: why attempt to interact with such an uncontaminated enclave with centuries-old traditions, which war and modern civilization put at risk of extinction.
