Peak - Un mondo al limite

Peak - A world to the limit

Italia, Germania / 2011 / 91 min / Colour

Italian premiere

The Alps mountain range presents a continually evolving landscape. Mass tourism has reached even its most remote corners, leaving indelible traces. Above all, winter tourism, climate change, and a lack of snow have made it necessary to develop imposing technological machines to create an ideal landscape, free from the constraints of nature. These machines are used to dig enormous artificial basins for the water used to make artificial snow; they create computerized salts in the heart of the mountains to control the snowfall, raise towers, and stretch pipes and wires along the ground. The Alpine landscape has become, by now, a disconcerting hybrid of technology and nature. And while ski lifts multiply, stone walls crumble, and the old farmers observe the inevitable changes in a world in which rural civilization is destined to become a vague memory or museum artefact. This film candidly shows the changes in the Alpine landscape and the inextinguishable traces left by the invasion of the tourists and by those who are ready to go to any lengths in order to satisfy the needs of the huge, profitable winter carousel.
