«It’s not a dog; it’s not a wolf. It only knows what it is not.” Balto is a mixed breed with grey fur, the large paws of a wolf and the soft profile of a dog, He live in the immense territory of Alaska between boundless pine forests and endless snow, where dogs pull the sleds and wolfs hunt in the forest. Rejected by both communities, he wanders around with a goose with a strong Russian accent. But when Balto finds his true roots, he is the one who saves the lives of the village children who are threatened by a diphtheria epidemic with a legendary feat that will make him a hero. The film is based on the true story of Togo, a half-breed belonging to Leonhard Seppala. His endeavour, which took place in 1925, is still celebrated today with a dog race and he is remembered with a commemorative statue in New York’s Central Park.
