Pratomagno

Waves

Gianfranco Bonadies, Paolo Martino / Italy / 2019 / 29 min / Colour

Among the high peaks of Pratomagno, a mountain range in the heart of Italy, Alberto and Sulayman share a special friendship. Alberto is a child born in the pastures of that pleasant land, while Sulayman is a young shepherd who arrived by sea from Gambia. Far from the hustle and bustle of the valley, the two live in peace and symbiosis with the woods and animals, dividing their day between looking after the flock and hiking along the stream. The warm light of summer is suddenly threatened by dark omens that gather like rain clouds, heralding a fracture, a separation that will arrive, feared and inevitable. Taking advantage of the possibilities of rough and evocative computer-generated imagery, the directors investigate a probable future, that of Alberto by now grown who returns to Pratomagno, which has become a landscape of memory and of the soul. A pouring rain falls in the darkness of an endless night, while the waters of the sea rise up to threaten the very top of the mountain.
