Maria is a girl of seventeen of Mayan ethnicity who lives with her parents in the Kaqchikel area of Guatemala, on a coffee farm on the slopes of an active volcano. Her life is marked by ancestral beliefs and traditions, in the unsettling shadow of this presence. Maria’s future seems decided: soon, an arranged marriage to Ignacio, the plantation supervisor, awaits her. But the girl loves Pepe, a young coffee harvester, with whom she dreams of a future in the United States. Maria seduces him, but after promises and secret encounters, Pepe goes away and leaves her, pregnant, to her destiny.
