BRASIL TALIAN

Brasile / 2014 / 65 min / Colour

Italian premiere

Earth, water, gold, forests. In Brazil, other than the past myth of greatness and abundance, there is another richness: linguistic diversity. The mixture of indigenous language and Italian dialects, brought here by immigrants, is called Talian. Millions of Brazilians speak or understand the dialects of Northern Italy, now reinterpreted and amalgamated with the Portuguese language. In a country that does not offi cially allow multilingualism, Talian is a bridge between the mountains of Brazil and those of Italy. Its last speakers, above all the elders, attempt with diffi culty to pass this cultural richness on to their grandchildren beforeit is irretrievably lost.

  • André Costantin

Born in 1968, Costantin holds a degree in regional literature and culture from the University of Caxias do Sul. Since 1996, he has worked as a director and documentary filmmaker, devoting himself above all to the theme of historical memory and culture in Brazil. At the Film Festival della Lessinia he presented Eco das montanhas: a viagem da palavra (2008) and Se milagres Desejais (2010).
