The village of Fengjie, on the banks of the Yangtze, is about to be submerged due to the construction of the enormous Three Gorges Dam. Visible on the empty houses are the red lines indicating the level of water expected at the next infl ow and the residents who have not yet abandoned the village prepare to do so. Once inhabited, the entire valley is now crisscrossed by ferries that move between semi-submerged houses, connecting the remains of villages that are destined to disappear. In this desolate landscape move about a man and a woman, chasing the elusive image of their spouses. The man searches for the wife who abandoned him, with their daughter, long ago, while the woman looks for her husband.
