Wildes Deutschland: der Bayerische Wald

Wild German: the Bavarian forest

Germania / 2012 / 44 min / Colour

Italian premiere

In the 1980s, the Bavarian Forest National Park witnessed an exceptional increase in the bark beetle population. This little insect provoked a true massacre, withering thousands of trees and creating a spectral landscape. The Park administration was unable to effectively fight this invasion and the future of the forest appeared to be doomed. And then, the miracle occurred; the beetle’s work produced an unexpected result and on the remains of the ancient site, a new forest began to grow that was richer, more varied, and more colourful than its predecessor. The death and rebirth of the forest are documented here in surprising images: the dead trees uprooted by the wind and the cemetery of dead stumps, but also the new life that springs from the overturned branches and the lush forest that returns to splendour.
