RIO LA VENTA. UN CANYON TRA DUE OCEANI

RIO LA VENTA. A CANYON BETWEEN TWO OCEANS

/ 1994 / 54 min / Colour

A deep canyon was carved by the Rio La Venta between the mountains of Chiapas, in Mexico. The fi rst, exploratory descent to this place was in 1990, followed in 1994 by the speleological and archaeological expedition documented in this fi lm, which was the start of a multidisciplinary research project still underway in 2013. Large caves open along the canyon walls and run under the surface of the rain forest. The ancient pre-Columbian people, the Zoque, whose archaeological remains have been found, frequented many of these caves. For these people, the great canyon carved out by the water was sacred and the caves represented the entrance to the Underworld, the world of the dead.
