Schnee

Snow

Germania / 2012 / 75 min / Colour

Covering the ski slopes at Alpine resorts with snow has become a true obsession in recent years. Winter sports attract millions of skiers, but climate change has disrupted the natural snowfall. Artificial snow is produced on an industrial scale; snowmaking systems that are increasingly sophisticated and increasingly invasive have become the norm. No tourists care whether the snow has fallen from the sky, as they are used to finding the slopes covered perfectly, and artificially. Even resort operators have begun to pay little attention to the weather forecast, concerning themselves above all with guaranteeing snow at all costs. Meanwhile, rows of cars clog the streets and parking lots and deafening music blasts from the kiosks where skiers dance and drink rivers of beer and grappa, while the meadows are transformed into chaotic playgrounds. The hoteliers and tourism operators live with the problems and contradictions of the Alps’ greatest economic resource in this manner, which is disrupting the mountains in the face of overwhelming indifference.
