Il nous faut du bonheur

We need happiness

For years the Kurdish population has lived a painful story of contradictions, barricaded in the mountains of the massif of Anatolia, in a country that exists only in their accountings: Kurdistan, divided among the territories of various nations. In the mountains of the region of Bardarashm, about an hour by car from Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, two directors gathered the moving testimony of this village ruled with a firm hand by the elderly Senia. In a large family in which the majority of the men endure a painful, clandestine existence and armed struggle, it is the women, first and foremost Senia, who impose the rhythms and decisions of everyday life. This is a unique case in the Islamic civilization, so hinged on the male figure. Wrapped in their black mantles, the women in the film dispense ancient gestures and invoke memories of a very difficult life as they await the happiness they so desire. Sokurov’s experience as a documentarian, along with his poetic sensibility, creates an intimate, profound film, able to unite the spontaneity of the protagonists’ words with the reflections and dialogue off screen, accompanying images of touching beauty and naturalness.
