Lika's cinema

Dalibor Matanic / Croatia (Hrvatska) / 2008 / 120 min / Colour

An isolated village in the Croatian mountains is the scene in which the stories of a young soccer player, a poor farmer, and a fat girl entwine. The region finds itself involved in the referendum in which voters must decide for or against entry into the European Union. But the protagonists don’t seem interested in this debate, as they are absorbed by their own problems. The young soccer player accidentally kills his mother and refuses to accept the offer to play for a wealthy foreign team, and thus risks also losing his father’s love. The girl, who is unable to find either a friend or a lover, becomes so desperate that she contemplates an upsetting action. The farmer, who for reasons of pride risks allowing his little, ill son to die of thirst, understands that true misery is to be found in solitude. This story is set in a grotesque, almost surreal world, halfway between the ridiculous and the tragic. The events touch the most hidden and intense feelings and expose a world in which attitudes are insular and oppressive.
