For generations, the “peat cutters” in the county of Karry, in Ireland, have hand-cut and gathered the sod peat and dried it in the summer sun to use as heating fuel in the winter. Unwilling to abandon a tradition that has united them for years, in the name of friendship and camaraderie, a group of old “peat cutters” continues to work by hand, right next to the modern earth-cutting machines that loom on the horizon. Over time, new technologies have replaced the old methods. Coming together to work by hand, with few words, and spending the days together and enjoying the resting time at the end of the day, filled with chatting and memories, becomes for these elderly people a nostalgic celebration of a disappearing tradition.
