IL CAMMINO DELL'APPIA ANTICA

THE APPIAN WAY

Alessandro Scillitani / Italy / 2015 / 100 min / Colour

The Appian Way, or Regina Viarum, the first Roman road, the forgotten mother of all European roads, is walked by the protagonists entirely on foot, from Rome to Brindisi. From behind his camera, the director Alessandro Scillitani follows his three travel companions:  Riccardo Carnovalini, who found the path thanks to GPS technology, Irene Zambon, and Paolo Rumiz, who noted his impressions of an extraordinary voyage on his trusty notepads. These notes formed the basis for his book, Appia. This trip did not merely consist of retracing the ancient Appian Way, but rather of rediscovering it and returning it to the world after decades of neglect and depredation, thus giving it back the honour it deserves.
