FLYING FISH

Nayra Sanz Fuentes / Spain / 2022 / 14 min / Colour

The flying fish is an animal that swims and flies, in water and in the air, connecting the two distinct elements. Adventurous and courageous, it has been considered a symbol of freedom since ancient times. In the underwater world the legs of tourists swim happily, while on the surface, on the beaches, umbrellas crowd. If at first the human bodies immersed in the fresh water of the sea evoke a feeling of sensory pleasure, as soon as the camera returns the reverse shot from the sky, the distorting nature of mass tourism on the beaches emerges. The ecosystem is altered, little by little, by the presence of the human being. The water becomes dark, and the nets, plastic bags, and ever more invasive quantities of submerged waste threaten the marine vegetation. The flying fish's ability to rise above the sea can be interpreted as a symbol of aspiration for something great. But its flight, now and forever, will be subject to the limits imposed by humanity.
