Erde

Earth

Nikolaus Geyrhalter / Austria / 2019 / 115 min / Colour

Earth is a vision that attacks the foundations of the planet. A visual reflection that embraces stone, mud and sand and conveys our gaze to the peaks of a new perception: man moves more land than nature itself has ever done. Through the exploration of seven places scattered across seven continents, Nikolaus Geyrhalter shows us how every year man shifts billions of tons of land to support his productive activities. From the tunnels to the Brenner pass to the Hungarian mines, from the extraction of tar sands in Canada to the marble quarries in Italy, man is redesigning landscapes and horizons, which seem increasingly abstract to the camera lens, a natural work inexorably manipulated, of an artificial and compromised beauty. The author's gaze starts from the top and penetrates the earth's crust, revealing the irrepressible work of bulldozers, excavators and explosives, which forever change the face of our planet.
