Honeyland

Ljubomir Stefanov, Tamara Kotevska / Macedonia / 2019 / 85 min / Colour

For Hatidze, bees are not a reason for living, but life itself. In her brightly coloured clothes, with bare hands, she climbs among the rocks to collect honey from wild honeycombs, scrupulously respecting the rule "take half, leave half". The last descendant of a Macedonian family that preserved the ancient art of wild beekeeping, she also finds time to devote herself to her elderly mother and to the care of their modest home. But Hatidze never loses her peculiar good humor, not even when the noisy caravan of the nomad Hussein, his wife, seven children and their cows is installed in the village. The woman welcomes the new neighbours with joy and generosity, sharing her precious knowledge with them. But the greed of Hussein and the restlessness of his entire family will seriously jeopardise the survival of the small ecosystem that, with fatigue and perseverance, Hatidze contributes to preserving.
