SENGIRĖ

THE ANCIENT WOOD

Mindaugas Survila / Estonia, Germany, Lithuania / 2017 / 83 min / Colour

In the heart of one of the oldest forests in Europe, in Lithuania, nature moves away from time and matter changes into an inexorable vital cycle, whose sound reverberates in water, trees, and animal calls. The camera examines the eternity of a place where man appears as a faint presence, confined to the margins of a constantly changing reality, to be scrutinised, cautiously, to discover the complex and rich balance. The meditative observation of nature follows the dances of the moths in the dense vegetation, the duels of the grouse and the fight of a spider submerged in the snow, leaving to the beauty of the images and the surprising interactions between the many animals that inhabit the forest the task of guiding a narration that from the tiniest detail transports us to the vastness of a fragile beauty, in which the wildlife is the only protagonist.
