LANA. WOOL IS IN THE AIR

Susanna Fanzun / Switzerland / 2016 / 25 min / Colour

Italian premiere

Wool, once a precious commodity, in recent years often went unused, and after the shearing that took place twice a year, had to be burned or disposed of. Today, wool is undergoing a period of interesting rediscovery. This renewable animal resource, like wood, thanks to knowledge, fantasy, art, study, design, and even extravagance, is being used in new ways. In Engadin, as in the rest of the world, the particularly fine wool called "merino" is most sought after; but this new regard is also spurring interest in the use of the less precious wool from Swiss mountain sheep. The documentary tells the story of the people who are rediscovering and valorising this material: a couple of shepherds with their flock, spinners and weavers, artists and entrepreneurs who with wool have designed and built innovative trekking equipment.
