WOLF AND SHEEP

Shahrbanoo Sadat / Afghanistan, Denmark, France, Sweden / 2016 / 86 min / Colour

In a village in the Afghan mountains, the task of grazing the flocks is entrusted to young children and teenagers. Without adults, the children form a miniature community, where the unwritten rules of tradition are in place and where legends and stories mix with reality. In this small world, males and females must remain separate. The girls playact at getting married, while the boys practice with a slingshot to drive the wolf away. However, for those who do not comply with the norm, there is no room to have fun with others. This is the fate of Sediqa, a girl whom her companions believe bewitched, and Qodrat, derided by others for his mother's much discussed second marriage. The two, isolated from the rest of the kids, meet and form a sincere friendship that draws them close until events separate them.
