TÖNLE: SMUGGLERS OF LANGUAGES AND CULTURES

The character of Tönle Bintarn, farmer, smuggler and outlaw, and protagonist of the renowned novel by Mario Rigoni Stern, is an emblematic example of overcoming geographical, linguistic and cultural boundaries. The book, Storia di Tönle, was translated into Cimbrian by Andrea Nicolussi. The linguists Alessandra Tomaselli and Ermenegildo Bidese speak with the author about the importance of this translation as a key to the complex relationship between language and culture, with readings from the book in Italian, German and Cimbrian.
